Rosetta  

The city was formerly an important port but declined after the building (1819) of the Mahmudiyah Canal, which diverted its trade to Alexandria. 

The Rosetta Stone, a black tablet containing inscriptions in three languages, found here, was deciphered and became crucial in unlocking the mystery of hieroglyphics and understanding Egyptian history.
