Turkey
controlls a third of the island, the northern shore. In 1983, the
Turkish-held area declared itself the "Turkish Republic of Northern
Cyprus" ("TRNC"), but it is recognized only by Turkey.
There are restrictions imposed by the EU for European boats entering
northern harbours, so updated information should be acquired before
venturing there.
